As of January 1, 2026, the new dental care reform Tiotandvården will be introduced. The reform is aimed at those aged 67 and older, which means that you will pay 10% of the reference price for certain necessary treatments – the rest is covered by the Social Insurance Agency – Försäkringskassan.
What is covered?
Tiotandvården applies to treatments necessary to maintain chewing function and oral health, for example:
- Fillings and root canal treatments
- Treatment of tooth loss (periodontitis)
- Some forms of prosthetics, such as crowns, bridges in the front teeth (tooth position 1-5)
- Treatments further back in the mouth are generally not covered by Tiotandvården but are reimbursed by the current high-cost coverage.
What is not covered?
Some measures continue to be outside the scope of Tiotandvården, among others:
- Examinations, X-rays and preventive care
- Aesthetic treatments performed solely for cosmetic reasons
- Treatments or material choices that are outside the reference price list of Försäkringskassan.
- Your general dental allowance (GDA) and the usual high-cost coverage remain in place and can be used as before for these parts.
How does it work in practice?
When Tiotandvården comes into effect, you will not need to apply for anything – the subsidy will be automatically deducted when you receive treatment from us. You as a patient only pay 10% of the reference price, we handle the rest of the administration with Försäkringskassan.
Things to consider:
Keep going on your surveys. As check-ups are not covered by Tiotandvården it is important to check your dental health as usual – waiting for the reform could be more expensive in the long run.
Plan major treatments well in advance. If you know that a major prosthetic treatment is coming up, it may be worth discussing with us how the timing affects the cost.
Ask about the alternatives. In some cases, there are different materials or solutions – we always explain clearly what is covered by Tiotandvården and what is not.
To sum up
We follow the development of the decisions on Tiotandvården closely and update the information regularly, as soon as new details become available. At your next visit, we’ll be happy to tell you more about how this support can affect your treatment.
